Berry Heavy® Winterberry (Ilex verticillata)

Berry Heavy® Winterberry (Ilex verticillata)

Heavy berry production for brilliant winter color! Berry Heavy® winterberry produces copious amounts of bright red berries that really shine in the fall and winter landscape. It is a deciduous holly, which means it loses its leaves in fall, but this makes that vivid fruit even showier. The berries can also be cut for use in floral arrangements. Both a male and female plant are required in order to set fruit - use Mr. Poppins® winterberry holly planted nearby. Berries are not edible for humans but are relished by birds after they've softened in mid-winter.

  • 6-8 feet tall and wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 3-9, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in part to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 6-8 feet apart for best results
  • Produces small white flowers in fall followed by abundant, vibrant red berries in winter - if a pollinator plant is provided nearby
  • Maintains glossy green foliage from spring to fall on an upright habit
  • Great for landscapes, damp or wet soils, cut flowers, wildlife gardens, rain gardens
  • Attracts birds and resists deer
  • Native to North America, produces decorative berries, fall and winter interest, bog plant

Care: Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid summer. Little to no pruning is needed; remove select branches to shape or manage growth if necessary.

Pollination: One male plant will pollinate up to 5 females; plants should be located within about 50'/15.24m of each other.
