Castle Wall® Blue Holly (Ilex x meserveae)

Castle Wall® Blue Holly (Ilex x meserveae)

Just as its name suggests, Castle Wall® Blue Holly stands tall and unwavering. With a dense, upright form and dark, glossy evergreen foliage, it brings bold structure to the landscape in every season. Whether used as a commanding specimen, planted in a group for screening, or closely spaced to create a nearly impenetrable hedge, Castle Wall® offers strength and visual impact.

Its tightly spaced branches are packed with foliage, contributing not only to its formidable appearance but also to excellent winter hardiness. As a male blue holly, Castle Wall® produces spring flowers that serve as an essential pollen source for nearby female varieties like Castle Spire® or Castle Keep®, helping to ensure a vibrant berry display.

Dependable, adaptable, and architecturally strong, Castle Wall® is a foundational plant that supports both design and ecological function in any landscape.

  • 5-8 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 5-7, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in part to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 3-5 feet apart for best results
  • Produces white flowers in the spring
  • Maintains soft to the touch, glossy deep green foliage year-round
  • Attracts bees
  • Blooms on old wood
  • Great for borders, hedges, screening, landscapes or mass planting
  • Fall and winter interest

Care: Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid summer. It’s best to avoid pruning, as flowers grow from old wood. If you need to do a few maintenance cuts, you can do so in the late winter or early spring.

Pollination: This is a male variety. It will not produce berries but will pollinate a female for berries. Plant one male for every seven females, and be sure to position them within 50 feet of each other so they can get good cross-pollination.
