Black Lace® Elderberry (Sambucus)

Black Lace® Elderberry (Sambucus)

Black Lace® Elderberry has intense purple-black foliage that is finely cut like lace. Its soft pink flowers bloom in early summer then make way for elderberries, which can be harvested when fully ripe for making wine and jam. It attracts birds and resists deer while being tough, adaptable, and growing in a range of challenging conditions. To produce berries, you'll need a companion Black Beauty, Instant Karma, or Laced Up elderberry as a pollinator plant.

  • 6-10 feet tall and wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 4-7, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success

  • Space plants 6-10 feet apart for best results
  • Maintains finely cut purple-black foliage from spring to frost
  • Produces lacey pink flowers in early summer
  • Blooms on old wood
  • Great for borders, containers, landscapes, as a focal point
  • Attracts birds and resists deer
  • Foliage interest, fall interest, produces edible berries
